‘When my son had cancer, exercise helped me cope – and gave me a new career’

Opening on October 3, Strong Women’s Club, on Caversham’s Church Street, will serve an all-female clientele. The idea is to provide a space where women have their needs tailored to and where they can exercise without fear, whether that’s because they’re feeling self-conscious when on their period, or simply feel more comfortable around women.

Nicky and Natalie have both worked at but wanted more freedom with their exercise regimens. They converted Natalie’s double garage into a gym at the beginning of lockdown and first launched Strong Women’s Club from there ladies gym trainer

“When we both started, we worked with everybody and then we quite quickly realised that women are very different from men, especially because of our menstrual cycle and our hormones,” Natalie explained. “So, how we train should be different from men because physically our muscle mass and hormones dictate that our bodies need different things, and at different times in the month.

“Just from changing our own training, training inline with our own hormones, we’ve noticed how freeing it is and how empowering it is and how you feel so much more energised. You don’t feel worried about training at a certain time of the month, or maybe going to a gym and being watched, or feeling self conscious.”
